What is the Washington County Green Team?
The Washington County Commissioners created the Green Team in 2008 to undertake projects that will reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while creating and retaining jobs in the County. The Green Team is made up of representatives from various Washington County organizations, including the Board of Commissioners, Planning Commission, the Purchasing, Parks, Public Safety and Building & Grounds departments, the Redevelopment Authority of the County of Washington and the Penn State Cooperative Extension.
Throughout their initial discussions, the Green Team honed in on three main topics: recycling, energy conservation and the beautification of Washington County’s county campus. Once the topics were finalized, Washington County applied for a received a grant from the Department of Energy through their Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant. This funding would help the Green Team complete the projects, which include:
- Purchase equipment and services to set up a regional recycling drop-off site for Nottingham Township
- Conduct energy audits on county-owned buildings
- Perform retrofits of county-owned buildings in accordance with the energy audits
- Set up a municipal traffic signal program that allows municipalities to replace traffic signals with LED bulbs
